The trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens was screened live via YouTube at the Star Wars Celebration giving fans their first glimpse at the return of Han and Chewie; this fanboygasim moment went onto dominated the internet.
DC and WB had teased the release of their trailer's IMAX premier on Monday, however shortly after the Star Wars trailer hit the net so did a leaked version of Batman v Superman's trailer; filmed on a smart phone, at what appeared to be a press screening in a foreign market?
With the premier of Avengers: Age of Ultron being the big story, for but a few days, movie fans turned their attention away from Marvel's summer blockbuster and remembered the true franchise to rule them all STAR WARS!!!
The timing of the release of the Force Awakens trailer seemed to overshadow the Avengers sequel, which hits theatres in the UK on May 1st, Disney appeared to have cock block themselves.
However it was a genius master stroke of marketing!
Yes Star Wars has detracted from the hype surrounding the return of the the Avengers, yet it has virtually neutralised the impact of the Dawn of Justice trailer!
In fact not only has it nullified DC's attempt to overshadow the release of Age of Ultron, the tone and style of the Star Wars trailer has left fans enthralled by the notion of a lighter, fun, action adventure and they seem very much opposed, it would appear, to seeing another dark, gloomy screen outing for beloved characters, as presented by Warner.
Add to this mix the fact that Universal are dropping the latest trailer for their entry into the franchise wars, Jurassic World on Monday, it would appear that DC had been completely double teamed!
The leaked trailer has taken the "wow" factor out of the Dawn of Justice trailer, rather than the grand "here it is" accompanied by a Han Zimmer bwwwaaaammm, we now have an official release in HD via Warner's official YouTube channel, not because they wanted to, but because they had no choice.
I feel it is a real shame.
This movie has been controversial with fans since casting announcements were made; the internet lost its shit over Batffleck!!!
Yet it deserved a grander first look.
So now it is officially here, with less of a bang and more of a whimper, what do I think?
Well....I love it!
Just as fans are sick of dark interpretations being the "thing to do" in recent years, I want the next 18 months of films to deliver a mixed bag.
I want light and quirky, tense and gripping, funny and smart, and dark and angst ridden in equal measures.
Oh and the real loser in all of this is the Terminator re-boot, prequel, alternate timeline disaster; that trailer was one of the worst pieces of movie promotional material in movie history.
