The Strain Season 2 Promo

As you may know here at Beyond the Box Office we got sucked into The Strain Season One last year and the finale ended on a good old fashioned, action packed, cliffhanger.
No spoilers as if you have not seen season one then you must right now!

Now Fox has just released their promo trailer for Season 2 and by the beard of Zeus does it not disappoint!!!

A quick catch up for those who have yet to check out Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan's modern day take on the classic Vampire mythos.

"A thriller that tells the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather, the head of the Center for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. He and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Eph, his team, and an assembly of everyday New Yorkers, wage war for the fate of humanity itself."
FX

The second season should air, once again, on UKTV's channel Watch.
And as you can tell from the promo it's going to be an epic season 2 premier!

GEEK 2015 - Interactive Experience - Real-life-point-and-click Adventure

Ever thought what it would be like getting sucked into a painting? No me neither, but then again this seems interesting.

"Take part in a real-life point-and-click video game that journeys through art history."

So what's all this actually about then?
Well...
Misuse of an experimental machine capable of sending people INSIDE works of art has dangerous consequences. The faces have disappeared from some of history’s most beautiful and significant self-portraits due to a slight mishap during a test flight of Endless Horizon Ltd's innovative new venture into Art Tourism.

Audiences are invited to join the team behind this experimental machine to rectify this terrible situation, enlisting the help of the Flemish, 17th Century, court painter Sir Anthony van Dyck, travelling through time, genres and styles to save the canon of art.

"Endless Horizons Ltd. have developed an incredible machine that is capable of sending people INSIDE works of art. One day the machine will make it possible for holiday-makers to catch a mini-break arranging Van Gogh’s sunflowers, bathing on Turner’s beaches or swimming in Warhol’s tomato soup."

"To test the machine Endless Horizons Ltd. have acquired three famous self-portraits from the Turner Contemporary's latest exhibition, Self: image and Identity, and now they just need a group of willing test subjects to make the maiden journey..."

Project director Simon Ryninks: “The Milo Wladek Co. creates narratives that bring together many art forms to give audiences a truly interactive experience. For The Van Dyck Vanishments, we’re creating a real-life video game in the vein of classics like Monkey Island and Broken Sword. Combining film, installation, performance and puzzles, we’re exploring the themes of self-expression and identity that run through the cannon of self portraiture. We’re also creating a downloadable digital app and a boardgame version of the narrative, to engage as many people as possible with its themes and ideas. This is a sprawling, slightly bonkers, but very cool project to be a part of. We’re really looking forward to being let loose on Margate!”

Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd February 2015

Performances are at 10:00, 11:30, 13:00, 14:30, 16:00, 17:30, 19:00 and 20:30 each day. Running time 45 min (approx) – plus a trip to Self: Image and Identity at Turner Contemporary

Performances start at Turner Contemporary, Margate, Kent
Suitable for those 8 and over.

John Wick - UK Trailer

Keanu Reeves is back! This time as retired Hit Man in "John Wick", A stylish tale of Revenge and Redemption.

After the sudden death of his beloved wife, John Wick (Keanu Reeves) receives one last gift from her, a beagle puppy named Daisy, and a note imploring him not to forget how to love. But John’s mourning is interrupted when his 1969 Boss Mustang catches the eye of sadistic thug Iosef Tarasov (Alfie Allen) who breaks into his house and steals it, beating John unconscious and leaving Daisy dead. Unwittingly, they have just reawakened one of the most brutal assassins the underworld has ever seen.

John’s search for his stolen vehicle takes him to a side of New York City that tourists never see, a hyper-real, super-secret criminal community, where John Wick was once the baddest guy of all.

Released in the tail end of 2014 in the States, John Wick was a Box Office success grossing almost $100 million on a budget of just $20 million, the Film was also a hit with critics who praised Reeves as the titular character.

John Wick fires into UK Cinemas on 10th April 2015

Star Wars vs Lord of the Rings - Which is Better?

The ultimate battle between two of the most successful franchises of all time is the basis for endless debates on message boards, polls and forums.
I personally love both sagas, however I was interested to see, beyond any of my own fanboy arguments, just which of these epics was actually, not so much better, but ultimately more successful.
I was actually quite surprised by the stats.
Before looking into some basic figures I had already called it for one side, mainly based on my personal views of each individual movie on its own stand alone merits.

Star Wars scored, to me, a 10/10 with Episode IV, 11/10 for Empire and Jedi at 8/10.
That is a solid set of numbers, I then thought "well Lord of the Rings must be pretty close?"
So I rated them 8/10, 9/10 and 10/10; so Star Wars won overall, but it was a close battle.
The Star Wars OG Trilogy ended up with a 9.66/10 average and LotR finished on 9/10...ooooh that's tight, yet unfortunately, although close, Middle Earth didn't manage the (almost) impossible of delivering an 11/10.
Now all that was just my personal opinion, all ratings were off the top of my head while watching the films.

Then I stopped to think, "but what about both franchises as overall sagas?"
I thought over Christmas, as I watched both sets of films, that I can see Jackson's movies being better overall as a 6 film series?
I have little affection for the overall vision Lucas had for the prequels, not to even mention Jar Jar!
Then with the final Hobbit movie just hitting theatres I thought "what if the prequel trilogy ended up costing Star Wars in this close fight, when all 6 films were thrown into the equation would they let the force down?"
The original trilogies were always going to be close as they are great films.
The prequel trilogies, however, that's a different story.
I was actually surprised by the results, as much as The Hobbit films are seen as inferior to Jackson's first outings in Middle Earth, I thought they surely would top the prequel trilogy? Right???

See pretty close. Now the US box office was always going to higher for the OG trilogy simply as between 1977-1983 more people went to the cinema.

Now the prequels...

The numbers give victory to the rebellion! Sorry Frodo!

Age of Ultron (2015) - Trailer 2 - Avengers vs Ant-Man

Ant-Man who?
This was always going to be Marvel's biggest problem of 2015.
Not only do Marvel and Disney have to deliver a film that is bigger, bader and better than the first outing of The Avengers, but they also have to, at least attempt to, top Guardians of the Galaxy.

Now that in itself is a tough task, what is even tougher is making sure everyone still remembers that there is this movie about a man and ants, or whatever, coming out as well.
The internet went crazy for Ant-Man, well it had time to go crazy for all of about 3 seconds since this bombshell drops mere days later.
Now I know that Marvel had Captain America: The Winter Soldier come out last year, then that was followed by Guardians of the Galaxy, however that's a different kettle of Aquaman compared to this year's releases.
This is like DC and Warner scheduling in an, as previously mentioned, Aquaman movie in the same summer as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice!

A generic, by-the-numbers origin story is not going to cut it this summer, not considering it is going up against the insane franchise schedule that we are being treated to in 2015.
It's a real shame as I really like Paul Rudd, he's been the Chris Pratt in waiting for years and now when he gets hit shot, well damn if Star-Lord hasn't already shat all over that chance.

I want Ant-Man to do well, but I just can't see it making an impact at the box office, human-sized or any size, well maybe an ant-sized impact.
The true hope for Ant-Man faded when Edgar Wright left the project. At least with Wright at the helm we could have got something innovative that, although not commercially successful, would have become a major cult sensation and had the same re-watch value as Scott Pilgrim vs The World. Instead we may get an Amazing Spider-Man 2 experience :(

Anyway The Avengers are back and going Empire Strikes Back for the sequel!

"When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth's Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. As the villainous Ultron emerges, it is up to The Avengers to stop him from enacting his terrible plans, and soon uneasy alliances and unexpected action pave the way for a global adventure." - Marvel Studios

UK cinemas get this film on 24th April 2015

Shameless US - Quick Thoughts

I don’t know why America feels the need to remake tv shows

The Young Ones, Coupling, Spaced, Inbetweens, I.T Crowd, Men Behaving Badly, the list goes on. The problem I have is that they change the script, the delivery, they add characters and remove pinnacle scenes so the show doesn’t make sense.

Well Shameless US is different. They finally nailed it.

Let’s get this out first: I have never seen the UK original. Maybe this is why I enjoy the show, as I have gone into it with a fresh head. Either way the show has been cast perfectly. William H. Macy as Frank Gallagher is brilliant.

The show is primarily about a dysfunctional family. The dad is a drug using drunk who doesn't care about anyone but himself, which leaves the older daughter to step into the parental role and run the household. Add in some teenagers and you have the Gallagher Family.

Now in its fifth season, the show started following its British counterpart for the first few seasons but now days has gone in its own direction.

Although there is currently no UK release set for this season you can give the show a go on Netflix. Trust me its worth a watch.

Films To Check Out In 2015 - IT FOLLOWS (2015)

The David Robert Mitchell horror received a showing at the London Film Festival in 2014 and has been hailed as a saviour come to reinvigorate the genre once more.
With fans being less than impressed by last years Annabelle and Ouija, the latter being rated at only 7% fresh, the horror genre seemed to, once again, be stuck in "formula" mode, simply regurgitating the same old guff; spin-offs, prequels, sequels and copy cats of previously "innovative" films with a heavy dose of jump scares employed over true tension and duh horror.
Other than the incredible The Babadook, 2014 was not a vintage year for horror films.

"After a strange sexual encounter, a teenager finds herself haunted by nightmarish visions and the inescapable sense that something is after her." - Radius-TWC

Starring Maika Monroe, who starred in the other fan favourite from 2014 The Guest, It Follows comes across as a truly unsettling experience.
The film hits UK Theatres February 27th 2015.

Ant-Man (2015) - Teaser Trailers Joke

With all the hype surrounding Marvel movie releases these days and the latest trend of teasing a teaser trailer, fans have had a lot of dates for their diary. Firstly you have to pencil in the "official title" announcement date. Then you have to get ready for the "teaser poster", the "teaser logo", the "teaser tease trailer" the "viral teaser website" and finally the usual stuff.
Cracked have come up with what they think will be Marvel and Disney's next marketing move for the 2015 blockbuster release.

I think Marvel and Disney just found their latest marketing team!

Chappie (2015) - First Look Trailer 2

What do you get when you let the visually acute director of the surprise 2009 smash hit District 9 loose with a project about artificial intelligence and robots?
You get Chappie, a blend of Robocop and Short Circuit!

Check the latest trailer below...

"Every child comes into the world full of promise, and none more so than Chappie: he is gifted, special, a prodigy. Like any child, Chappie will come under the influence of his surroundings - some good, some bad - and he will rely on his heart and soul to find his way in the world and become his own man. But there's one thing that makes Chappie different from anyone else: he is a robot. The first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself. His life, his story, will change the way the world looks at robots and humans forever." - by Sony Pictures Entertainment

Neill Blomkamp has stood out since 2009 as a director who really has his own solid style. Chappie (2015) stars Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver and Dev Patel, all top rated actors.
However the real excitement will be to see Sharlto Copley going head to head with Andy Serkis (not in the film I mean in acting terms) as he delivers a motion capture performance in the titular role.
From what I see in the trailer I think the District 9 actor will nail it!
The Short Circuit films have a special place in my heart and it's no secret Robocop (1987) is one of my favourite films of all time, so I can not wait to see this one.

Chappie will be in UK Theatres on 6th March 2015.

Empire Cinemas Top 10 Female Villains - Into The Woods

To celebrate Meryl Streep coming back to our screens as the witch in Into the Woods, Empire Cinemas have compiled a list of the best female villains in cinema to get you in the mood before you enter the forest…

1)      The Wicked Witch of the West (The Wizard of Oz, 1939)
Green-skinned, cranky and with a penchant for shoes, this is not a woman to mess with. Famously melting into nothing when Dorothy hurls water at her (no wonder she covered her hair when she couldn’t shower), the Wicked Witch of the west is the stuff of nightmares, flustering Dorothy enough to get her to traipse off to the Emerald City. Actress Margaret Hamilton certainly sweated for the part spending 6 weeks recuperating from burns after her fiery exit from Munchkinland malfunctioned. So scary was she that studio bigwigs cuts several scenes, worrying they were too much for children.

2)      Maleficent (Sleeping Beauty, 1959)
It was a close run thing with Snow White’s Queen, but Maleficent pips her to the post as the Disney uber villain (although we’d like to see that battle).  Sleeping Beauty took a budget-busting nine years to make and the stunning palette makes the film a classic. Last year Angelina Jolie made the deliciously evil witch her own in a role that was made for her – Maleficent lives on!

3)      Miranda Priestly (The Devil Wears Prada, 2006)
Meryl Streep is no stranger to playing the villain in the Anna Wintour inspired performance as the boss everyone loves to hate. Ultimately it teaches us the ultimate lesson – all problems can be solved by Chanel.

4)      Catherine Tramell (Basic Instinct, 1992)
Any woman who can cross her legs like that has got to be a narcissistic psychopath. Showered with controversy at the time, Sharon Stone’s bisexual killer has now become a movie icon. Writer Joe Eszterhas, who also wrote Flashdance, churned out the original screenplay in 13 days before a bidding war kicked in on the unproduced story.

5)      Baby Jane Hudson (Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, 1962)
One of the most infamous of Hollywood rivalries between Bette Davies and Joan Crawford meant art mirrored life perfectly in this psychological thriller. Bette Davis plays Baby Jane, a former child star who imprisons and antagonises her wheelchair-bound actress sister Blanche (Crawford). Both dream of their former fame and glory but Davis slips further and further into fantasy while avidly torturing her sister. Both actresses found their careers revitalised after such star turns.

6)      Nurse Mildred Ratchett (One flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, 1975)
Possessing a poised menace that puts Jack Nicolson in his place, it’s no wonder Louise Fletcher’s performance as Nurse Ratchett swept the board at Oscar time. Yet she’d auditioned for the part for over six months with director Milos Forman telling her each time she wasn’t approaching the part correctly. She was finally signed a week before filming.

7)      Mayday (A View to a Kill, 1985)
It may be Roger Moore’s least favourite of his Bond films, but the addition of Christopher Walken, Duran Duran and the statuesque Grace Jones as Walken’s villainous sidekick Mayday made this a Bond film for the MTV generation. Moore was barely on speaking terms with Jones during filming but her Amazon qualities made her a force to be reckoned with.

8)      Annie Wilkes (Misery, 1990)
Stephen King sure can churn ‘em out and Kathy Bates is perfect as the megafan Annie that puts the fear of God into all novelists, kidnapping the writer played by James Caan and holding him prisoner to make him write his books how she sees fit. That’s right. Holding James Caan prisoner. Him from The Godfather. NOW you’re impressed…

9)      Mystique (X-Men, 2000)
Magneto’s loyal second in command, she’s also the perfect soldier but actress Rebecca Romijn-Stamos’s make-up for the blue-clad role took a whopping nine hours. She could not drink wine, use skin creams, or fly the day before filming, because it could have caused her body chemistry to change slightly, causing the 110 prosthetics applied to her skin to fall off.

10)   Alex Forrest (Fatal Attraction, 1987)
Yup, Michael Douglas is back again with a psycho killer, but Glenn Close is SCARY as the persistent stalker from hell who will not let it go. We wouldn’t let Michael Douglas go either.

Into The Woods is released at Empire Cinemas from Friday 9th January.

A big thank you to Empire Cinemas!

Ant-Man (2015) - UK Teaser Poster

Marvel and Disney released the UK teaser poster for their latest adaptation.
Ant-Man was a founding member of The Avengers. Hank Pym was in the suit at the time and even created Ultron. So fans wait to see how interwoven the Ant-Man movie's storyline will be with The Avengers sequel.

"Armed with a super-suit with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, con-man Scott Lang must embrace his inner hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, plan and pull off a heist that will save the world."- by Marvel.com

So who is Scott Lang (Paul Rudd).

"Scott Lang was an electronics expert who could not support his family doing repair work, so he turned his talents to burglary. Apprehended, he served his prison sentence and was paroled for good behaviour. During his time in prison, however, his wife divorced him. Lang had furthered his studies of electronics while in prison and was soon hired by Stark International to work in its design d When his daughter Cassie was diagnosed as having a serious congenital heart condition, Lang sought the aid of surgeon Dr. Erica Sondheim, whom he believed to have been held prisoner at Cross Technological Enterprises (CTE). Desperate to help his daughter, Lang decided to resort to burglary." - Marvel
